The 165 series was introduced in 1963 as an express train for mountain routes in DC electrified sections.
The Tokai Express is a train that connects Tokyo and Shizuoka, and has a long history, originating from the semi-express Tokai that was introduced in 1955.
Since 1989, the 165 series from Shizuoka Depot has been in charge of the operation of the Tokai Express, and in addition to this train, it also served as the 375M and 372M night local trains that ran between Tokyo and Ogaki, also affectionately known to passengers as the Ogaki Night Express.
The trains were livery in the yellow and green Shonan colors, and featured green cars, reminiscent of the old days of the Japanese National Railways. However, with the timetable revision on March 16, 1996, the Tokai Express was upgraded to the Tokai Limited Express and the Ogaki Night Express was upgraded to the Moonlight Nagara Rapid, and the trains used were also changed from the 165 series to the 373 series.
Upon their retirement, for approximately two weeks until the timetable change, all basic formations were fitted with trapezoidal headmarks that mimicked their former appearance, with the Tokyo side being uniformly red, and each formation on the Shizuoka side having a different colour, with the K1 formation having a yellow mark on the Shizuoka side.
